The making of a UHURU product

From hide to finished piece — the eleven steps every UHURU product passes through.

The making of a UHURU product

Nothing we make is pressed out of a mould. Every belt, wallet and bag moves through the same slow sequence of steps, most of them done by hand, most of them unchanged for generations.

Selection and cutting

A hide is chosen for grain, weight and character, then cut to pattern from its strongest part — the back. We cut around scars and stretch marks rather than through them, which is why one hide yields fewer pieces than a factory would allow.

Stitching and edges

Edges are bevelled with a blade, then burnished by rubbing until they seal into a smooth, rounded finish. Stitching is done with two needles and waxed thread — a saddle stitch — so that if one stitch ever breaks, the seam holds.

Hardware and inspection

Solid brass hardware is set by hand. Then the piece is inspected against the original pattern, conditioned once, and packed with the name of the maker who finished it.
