Uhuru Leather · Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Made to carry your story.

Full-grain leather, cut and stitched by hand in Tanzania. Pieces that grow more beautiful with every year you carry them.

The house of Uhuru

Leather should become more beautiful with time — not less.

Most things are designed to be replaced. We make the opposite: belts, wallets and bags cut from full-grain hide, stitched by hand, and built to be carried for decades.

“Uhuru” means freedom. For us that means freedom from disposable fashion — the quiet confidence of owning one good thing, made properly, that gets better with use.

Craftsmanship

Nothing here is pressed out of a mould.

Every UHURU piece passes through four pairs of hands. It is a slow, deliberate process — the same one used by generations of leatherworkers.

See the process

01

Selection

Hides are inspected and selected by hand for grain, weight and character.

02

Cutting

Each piece is cut to pattern from the strongest part of the hide.

03

Stitching

Edges are bevelled, burnished and saddle-stitched with waxed thread.

04

Finishing

Solid brass hardware is set, the piece is conditioned and inspected.

Our story

Uhuru means freedom.

We started UHURU with a simple belief: a country with some of the finest leather on the continent deserves goods made to match it — and makers paid properly for the skill they carry.

Every hide is chosen by hand. Every edge is finished by hand. Every piece leaves the workshop with the name of the person who made it — and a promise that it will outlast the trends.

Materials

The material is the product.

We work in full-grain vegetable-tanned cowhide — the top layer of the hide, finished without heavy correction. It keeps its natural grain, absorbs the oils of your hands, and darkens into a patina that is yours alone.

We say exactly what each piece is made of — outer, lining, hardware and thread — so you always know what you're buying.

Word of mouth

“The belt is the first leather thing I've owned that looks better now than the day I bought it.”

Amina J. · Dar es Salaam · Kanda Belt

“I carried the weekender from Dar to Zanzibar and back. It holds more than it looks, and it's still the best-looking bag in the room.”

Daniel M. · Arusha

“You can feel the handwork. The edges, the stitching — nothing about it feels mass-produced.”

Neema K. · Dodoma
