UHURULeather
The UHURU workshop in afternoon light

Our story

Uhuru means freedom.

Why we exist

A country with some of the finest leather on the continent deserves goods made to match it.

We started UHURU because too much good hide leaves Tanzania as a raw material, and comes back as a cheap import. We wanted to make the opposite: pieces cut and stitched here, by hands that know the material, sold at a fair price that pays the maker properly.

“Uhuru” is freedom — freedom from disposable fashion, freedom to own one good thing instead of ten forgettable ones, and the freedom that comes from a craft practised with confidence.

01

Material first

We work in full-grain vegetable-tanned cowhide, and we say exactly what every piece is made of — outer, lining, hardware and thread.

02

Hands, not moulds

Nothing is pressed out of a machine. Cutting, stitching and finishing are done by hand, the way they've been done for generations.

03

Built to age

We make things that improve with time. Patina, wear, a scuff or two — that's the material telling the truth.

Where we're going

From a workshop to a house of African leather.

Our ambition is straightforward: build a brand from Tanzania that the rest of the world knows by name. More makers trained in the craft, more hides finished here, more people carrying something made properly — and carrying it for years.
